Off to the elephant post

From Accra, I took a small turbo prop to Sunyani. Sunyani is about a 45 minute flight away. The plane was scorching hot for the first 20 minutes, and in spite of the fact that the sandwiches offered (turkey, tuna, or chicken) looked great, I decided to pass and took the apple juice instead.

The cloud cover was heavy - another reminder about how humid Ghana is this time of year. Sunyani is a city in the West African republic of Ghana, and is the capital of the both the Sunyani District and Brong-Ahafo Region. According to the 2005 population estimates 80,245 people reside in the city of Sunyani (Wikipedia)

There are several technical schools and a teaching hospital in this city that was once an elephant hunter's outpost (the name "sunyani" comes from the Ashanti word for elephant).

As I get off the plane, I am surprised that there are so many school children lined up on the upper balcony of the terminal. Nawwwww surely they are not there to greet ME! :)
